In Naturopathic Doctor school we have a lot of emphasis placed on understanding the human body, and truthfully I have always been fascinated by its complexity…it truly stuns the intellect.

In 1 human lifetime:
You will grow 1,000 layers of skin.

Your nails will grow 7 feet.

You will lose 70 miles of hair from your head…
Your heart will beat 2,500,000,000 times!

If you rub your forearm briskly for a few seconds, 300,000 skin cells will come off of it. By age 70, you will shed 105 pounds of skin.

In one day, a human sheds 10 billion skin flakes.

Every square inch of the human body has about 19,000,000 skin cells.

Every hour one billion cells in the body must be replaced.

Once a human reaches the age of 35, he/she will start losing approximately 7,000 brain cells a day. The cells will never be replaced.

Two million red blood cells die every second in your body.

Each day your body pumps 400 gallons of recycled blood through the kidneys.

Your body has about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. That’s enough to go around the world twice.

You were born with 300 bones in your body, however when a person reaches adult hood they only have 206 bones. This occurs because many of them join together to make a single bone.

Your heart will beat around 3 billion times in if you live an average lifespan.

About 2 million blood cells die in your body every second, and the same number are born each second.

Within a tiny droplet of your blood, there are some 5 million red blood cells, 300,000 platelets and 10,000 white cells.

It takes about 1 minute for a red blood cell to circle the whole body. Red blood cells make approximately 250,000 round trips of the body before returning to the bone marrow, where they were born, to die.

Red blood cells may live for about 4 months circulating throughout the body, feeding the 60 trillion other body cells.

Your skin secretes antibacterial substances. These substances explain why you don’t wake up in the morning with a layer of mold growing on your skin - most bacteria and spores that land on the skin die quickly.

The surface area of your lungs is roughly the same size as a tennis court.

The capillaries in your lungs would extend 1,000 miles if placed end to end.

Considering all the tissues and cells in your body, 25 million new cells are being produced each second!

In 1 square inch of your skin there lies 4 yards of nerve fibers, 1300 nerve cells, 100 sweat glands, 3 million cells, and 3 yards of blood vessels.

Nerve impulses, to and from the brain, travel as fast as 170 miles per hour.

Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks otherwise it will digest itself.

Your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart.

On average you produce a quart of saliva a day or 10,000 gallons in a lifetime.

Every person has a unique tongue print.

On average your heart will pump 48 million gallons of blood in your lifetime.

Your brain generates more electrical impulses in a single day than the world’s entire telephones put together.

A fetus acquires fingerprints at the age of three months.

Your sneeze can exceed the speed of 100 mph.

Your brain continues to send out electrical wave signals approximately 37 hours after death.

You shed and re-grow outer skin cells about every 27 days - almost 1,000 new skins in a lifetime.

You have about 45 miles of nerves in the skin.

Your eye can detect more than 10,000,000 different colors!

Every seven years, your body replaces the equivalent of an entirely new skeleton.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. ” Psalms 139:14-16.
