Did you know that every year According to The Institute of Medicine, a non-profit organization chartered by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, at least 1.5 million Americans become victims of hospital mishaps or mistakes! The mistakes in question are not exactly small fry either.
From 40,000 to 100,000 people die yearly from things such as surgical mishaps and drug mix-ups. According to a study by Auburn University, patients may get the wrong drug as much as 1 time out of 5. Thus the death toll from mistakes, it is estimated, is at least as bad as that from car accidents or breast cancer, and possibly as bad as that from strokes
Additionally 100,000 people die of infections from hospital-bred bacteria that are resistant to one or more of the antibiotic drugs doctors use to kill them according to the Center for Disease Control.
Many of those deaths might be prevented by simply washing hands more often or taking other simple measures and precautions.
Examples:
In November, 2007, actor Dennis Quaid’s newborn infants were astonishingly given 1,000 times the intentional dose of the drug heparin (a blood thinner) just after being born at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The twins’ blood became hazardously thin, thus putting them at risk for hemorrhaging. Fourtently, hospital faculty discovered the mistake and the babies were given another drug to counteract the heparin.

In a different widely reported case, comedian Dana Carvey was the victim of a bungled heart bypass procedure; his doctor operated on the wrong artery. The problem had to be corrected in a second procedure.
As noted above, something as simple as the washing of hands could possibly save many lives. One study revealed doctors only washed their hands 44% of the time if nobody was looking. If they knew they were being watched, 61% washed their hands!
So be warned, although hospitals serve a good purpose, especially in trauma situations, you may leave with something that you did not arrive with…or you might not leave at all.
