Olive tree leaves have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times, and research suggests that olive leaf extracts have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. A recent Reuters article pointed out how modern research has discovered, “that olive leaf extracts have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions”; moreover that “There is also evidence that the extracts have properties that could lower blood pressure.”

A study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, considered 20 sets of identical twins with “borderline” hypertension — blood pressure that is above the optimal level of 120/80, but below the cutoff of 140/90 used to diagnose high blood pressure. One of the twins of each pair chosen and given tablets containing olive leaf extract, the other twin received no supplements but did receive advice on lowering blood pressure – which is the standard approach to managing borderline hypertension. Of the supplement users half took 500 mg of olive leaf extract per day, while the other half took 1,000 mg.
After eight weeks, the study discovered that the supplement users on the 1,000 mg. dose showed a substantial drop in their blood pressure overall — from an average of 137/80 to 126/76. There was also another benefit…they also saw their average level of “bad” LDL cholesterol fall!
The twins who received no supplements exhibited no significant change in their blood pressure and a smaller improvement in cholesterol, noted the researchers.
Tania Perrinjaquet-Moccetti, a molecular biologist and head of the study noted that benefits seen in the study can be attributed to the various “bioactive components” of the olive leaf. Of these compounds she notes the most significant is a compound called oleuropein.
Research indicates that oleuropein acts as an antioxidant and can help relax as well as dilate the blood vessels. Perrinjaquet-Moccetti also pointed out that no one ingredient of the olive leaf extract accounts for its blood pressure benefits.

OLIVE LEAF AS ANTIBIOTIC
Olive Leaf Extract also has a scientifically backed reputation for helping to protect against a wide variety of viral, bacterial and parasitic invasions without harming beneficial bacteria.
As an antiviral, olive leaf extract may also protect against outbreaks of viral diseases such as smallpox. Researchers credit a number of unique properties possessed by the olive leaf compound for the broad killing power: An ability to interfere with critical amino acid production essential for viruses. An ability to contain viral infection and/or spread by inactivating viruses or by preventing virus shedding, budding or assembly at the cell membrane.
Olive leaf extract has also been shown to destroy or inhibit the growth of many tapeworm, hookworm, flatworm, and roundworm parasites.
