Do You Have A Liver? You Should Know About Milk Thistle

The liver is the largest glandular organ of the body. It weighs about 3 lb (1.36 kg). It is the cleanser and filter of the bloodstream and is of vital importance. It is the largest organ in the body and has an enormous amount of blood flowing through it every minute of our lives. The liver is vital for protein synthesis, glucose homeostasis, bilirubin excretion, and toxin removal, among other critical functions. In general, the liver has a substantial functional reserve because of its dual blood supply: portal-venous (75%) and hepatic-arterial (25%). The liver is a unique organ… It is the only organ in the body that is able to regenerate.

The liver can best be described as a complex chemical factory which performs many functions that are essential for life. For instance bilirubin is made in the liver to help with fat metabolism and then travels down the bile duct just before emptying into the duodenum, a section of the small intestine. If a large amount of the liver is replaced by tumor, or if bile duct obstruction occurs, bilirubin builds up in the blood.

Similarly Bile is a fluid made in and released by the liver. It flows from the liver, through the bile ducts and into the small intestine where it is needed for the digestion of fats. Bile has two important functions: to aid in digestion and to remove and eliminate toxic substances from the body. The bile that is produced by liver cells is secreted into very tiny channels that run between the liver cells that line the sinusoids, called canaliculi.

Herbalists have long used milk thistle to detoxify the liver and treat nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Studies from the University of California at Irvine suggest that silibinin (another milk thistle compound) can prevent the growth of cancer cells in the liver!

Milk thistle has been considered especially helpful in cases of jaundice, colitis, pleurisy, and diseases of the spleen. Herbalists claim that milk thistle achieves the above in three different ways: First, milk thistle is said to strengthen the outer protective membrane of liver cells so that they are better at deflecting toxins. Second, milk thistle is said to shield the liver from free radicals, which are potentially dangerous, yet inevitable byproducts of some of the body’s basic metabolic functions.

Discover the Astonishing Power Of Herbs With Herbal Secrets Uncovered Click Here

In fact Silymarin, a constituent of milk thistle is now listed in The Merck Index as a liver protector. Whole seeds of Milk Thistle or a tincture made from them are now used in the United States as well as Europe, for both protection and regeneration of the liver. Silymarin helps normalize liver function, allowing those who must take liver-harming medications (which practically all drug medications are) to do so with less risk of liver damage. In fact, in one study, 66 women taking anticonvulsant or psychiatric medications showed abnormal liver-function tests….indeed Milk Thistle is a God send!

Eating Grapes For A Stronger Heart

Posted by NatureDoc | Posted in Cholesterol, Foods That Heal, Natural Remedies For High Blood Pressure/Hypertension | Posted on 29-10-2008

Reuters News reported today on a new study concerning the amazing benefits of grapes for the heart and high blood pressure. The article noted, “Grapes helped lower blood pressure and improve heart function in lab rats fed an otherwise salty diet, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday. The findings, published in the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences, may help people with high blood pressure, they said.”

Mitchell Seymour of the Cardioprotection Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan said in a statement with regard to this study, “These findings support our theory that something within the grapes themselves has a direct impact on cardiovascular risk, beyond the simple blood pressure-lowering impact that we already know can come from a diet rich in fruits and vegetables”.

Seymour and his colleagues wanted to determine the effects of ordinary grapes on rats that had developed high blood pressure as the result of being fed a salty diet.

“”The inevitable downhill sequence to hypertension and heart failure was changed by the addition of grape powder to a high-salt diet,” Dr. Steven Bolling of the University of Michigan, who heads up the lab, said in a statement.” He also stated that he believes that the flavonoids, beneficial chemicals found in grapes, could be having the positive effect on blood pressure. In fact flavonoids have been shown in other studies to have heart-health benefits.

The Amazing Grape

Flavonoids are strong antioxidants that protect healthy DNA from damaging free radicals, and all varieties of grapes have them. Antioxidants are shown to protect against the formation of age-related macular degeneration, cancer, and heart disease. In fact studies show that eating a diet high in flavonoids reduces the risk of developing several types of cancer; and antioxidants, such as grape seed extract, have been reported beneficial in cancer prevention.

Polyphenols

Polyphenols are natural antioxidants found in grapes and some other plant foods. Their types and actions vary, depending on where in the grape they are found. Polyphenols decrease oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) a key step in the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Grape polyphenols also have other protective effects on the heart and blood vessels, including actions to reduce blood clotting, abnormal heart rhythms, and blood vessel narrowing.

Studies

Studies in patients treated with grape seed extracts have shown improvements in blood flow and cholesterol levels. In other studies, drinking Concord grape juice has improved measures of blood flow in patients with coronary artery disease and lowered blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Studies in humans have shown improved antioxidant capacity when grape seed supplement is added to the diet, as well as improvements in blood vessel function.

Thus it would be very wise to regularly eat grapes, and even juice them for even greater benefit. Not only are they good for you, but they are GOOD!

Parasites What You Should Know About Them

"Parasites are the missing diagnosis in the genesis of many chronic health problems, including diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and endocrine system. Most individuals would be truly amazed if they knew the extraordinarily high number of Americans who are unknowingly infected by parasites…" – Dr. Hermann R. Bueno, Fellow of Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene of London. Writing in Volume 4 of the Angels of Life Natural Health Journal noted: "Pathology can result from pneumonia caused by a worm's migration through the lungs, blocking of the gastrointestinal track or the bile or pancreatic duct. Moreover, parasite infestation can cause even more severe problems…"Make no mistake about it, worms are the most toxic agents in the human body. They are one of the primary underlying causes of disease and are the most basic cause of a compromised immune system." "I strongly believe", says Leo Galland, M.D. "that every patient with disorders of immune function, including multiple allergies (especially food allergy), and patients with unexplained fatigue or with chronic bowel symptoms should be evaluated for the presence of intestinal parasites."

Cancer, Cancer Pain, And Alternative Remedies

Posted by NatureDoc | Posted in Breast Cancer, Cancer, Detox, Herbs That Heal | Posted on 27-10-2008

I recently came across an insightful article written by a naturopath addressing cancer with natural methods in a newspaper from Philadelphia. I have reprinted 99.99% of it below.

Article by By Albert Grazia

“One morning, the mother of a terminally ill cancer patient called my office. Her son had renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer), which had spread to his liver and lungs. He was recently discharged from the hospital and was given a very poor prognosis (two to three weeks to live). Since conventional medical treatment failed to control his disease, he was advised to seek hospice care. She realized it was a hopeless situation, but still wanted to know if it was too late to do anything to help her son. I reassured her that it’s only too late if you never start. When I entered the home, I observed a young man, who was very pale and suffering from cachexia, the wasting syndrome commonly associated with advanced cancers. (In fact, it is estimated that 40 percent of all cancer patients actually die of malnutrition.) He was nauseous and kept a bucket nearby because he was constantly vomiting. His appetite was almost nonexistent.

I noticed his abdomen was swollen, often caused by a buildup of fluid called ascites. This is generally regarded as a sign of liver failure from protein malnutrition and correlated on blood tests with a low serum albumin level. In addition, his bowels had almost ceased to function. However, the most distressing symptom of his disease was the intense pain that even morphine taken every four hours could not alleviate. As a naturopath, I am often called to help terminally ill cancer patients. At this point, my focus is directed toward improving the quality of remaining life. This is where natural healing can provide dramatic results.

Most would agree that few diseases cause such excruciating pain as that experienced by many terminally ill cancer patients. This added suffering contributes to increased stress to both the patient as well as family members. Sometimes death is almost welcomed as the final relief to such an unimaginable degree of suffering. Family and friends console themselves with thoughts that their loved one is finally at peace. Unfortunately, those suffering from advanced cancers find that not only has conventional medicine failed to cure them, but it also offers them few options other than to spend their last days in agonizing pain only partly relieved by strong and toxic drugs.

Cancer Pain

Traditionally, cancer pain syndrome is classified according to the structures involved, such as somatic, visceral, and neuropathic. Somatic pain can be experienced throughout the body, while visceral pain tends to be localized to the internal organs in the abdominal cavity. Neuropathic pain is more frequently felt in the extremities such as the hands and feet. Associated pain can range from acute to chronic, with the final stage known as intractable. Pain may result from tumor impingement on other organs or nerve endings. To complicate matters, side effects of modern, more aggressive cancer treatment can also be responsible for inflicting significant pain. This is evident due to the greater potential for damage to the peripheral nervous system leading to neuropathic pain. Cancer drugs that are toxic to nerve cells can leave a patient with chronic pain in the hands and feet.

At the end stage of disease, patients may feel abandoned by the medical community. They are told there is nothing more that can be done and instructed to get their affairs in order. All that remains is to provide some type of pain relief. Currently, the most common form of pain management involves the use of opioids (narcotics) such as morphine. Unfortunately, this is often not entirely effective in eliminating pain and often merely results in drowsiness. For this reason, methadone, is sometimes substituted for morphine. However, since it can remain in the body for up to two days, repeated doses of methadone can accumulate in the blood to toxic levels.

Natural Treatment of Cancer Pain

My training in natural healing has taught me to approach cancer pain from a different perspective. I regard it as a message, a desperate cry for help from the body, alerting us that there is a severe toxic condition that the body’s own detoxification system is unable to eliminate. In cancer patients, this involves the buildup of one particular substance. Studying the metabolism of cancer at the cellular level, Otto Warburg, a Nobel prize-winning biochemist, demonstrated in 1930 that tumor cells prefer a particular form of metabolism known as anaerobic (non-oxygen) glycolysis. The main byproduct of this inefficient metabolism is a chemical called lactic acid. This is the same lactic acid secreted by your muscles during a strenuous workout. When oxygen stores are depleted, muscle cells revert to anaerobic metabolism and release lactic acid. This is the substance responsible for the localized pain experienced the day following the workout. Lactic acid must then be metabolized by the liver back into glucose. This process requires extra energy and can place a strain on the liver. Lactic acid secreted by tumor cells accumulates in cancer patients, particularly when the liver is too weak to eliminate it. This can be responsible for the intense chronic pain plaguing cancer patients. If you recall those muscle aches the day after a workout, multiply the pain a hundredfold, and you can better imagine the suffering that many terminally ill cancer patients endure. That explains why powerful narcotics are often prescribed at this stage of the illness.

In natural healing, my aim is to build up the body’s ability to heal itself. Although with advanced cancer I am focusing on quality of life, the process still begins with nutrition. With advanced stage of disease, the body is either depleted of digestive enzymes, or lacks the energy and raw materials to produce them in sufficient quantities to permit the proper breakdown and absorption of nutrients. So the key to nourishment in the terminal patient is to stop eating—and start juicing. Fresh, raw, (preferably organic) fruit and vegetable juices contain enough enzymes to allow them to pass through the stomach and enter the intestines where they are quickly and easily assimilated. Fresh juices are concentrated nutrition and are even more potent when we add a whole-food (SuperFood) supplement containing the naturally occurring phyto-chemicals that are abundantly found in organic spirulina, wheat grass, barley grass and alfalfa. Sometimes a terminally ill patient will have to start slowly, drinking half a glass at time, diluted with water. The goal is to eventually consume one glass every hour, or up to a gallon daily. In addition to the juices, a tablespoon of flaxseed oil is also necessary as a source of alpha linolenic acid. This omega-three essential fatty acid does not promote tumor growth and is noted for its anti-inflammatory effects. This nutritional foundation will provide the nutrients required by the body to heal and begin the detoxification process.

Toxicity
Due to the nature of their disease, cancer patients are very toxic. In addition to the toxicity received from cancer treatments, tumor cells are active metabolically and release many waste products. Even if cancer drugs were successful in killing off tumor cells, the dead tumor cells will often remain to further poison the body. To make matters worse, one of the more common side effects of narcotic pain medications such as morphine is constipation. An impacted colon places pressure on an already crowded abdominal area and can press on nerve endings contributing to more discomfort. To assist the body in its detoxification efforts, proper colon function must be restored as quickly as possible. I normally begin with an intestinal corrective herbal formula containing cascara, senna, and aloe. However, in severe cases, I suggest dissolving the herbs in water and adding them to an enema bag. Once bowel function is normalized, most cancer patients begin to feel less discomfort, pressure, and pain.

Dr. Max Gerson, a physician who devoted much of his life to studying cancer, also stressed the importance of colon cleansing and its role in decreasing cancer pain. In addition, he developed a simple pain formula for his patients to use until the colon cleansing was effective in reducing pain. His patients were instructed to take one aspirin tablet (five grams) with 100 milligrams of vitamin C and 50 milligrams of niacin, up to four times per day.

Many cancer patients have found that hot castor oil packs can also help relieve pain. This is done by saturating a cotton or flannel cloth in castor oil and placing it directly on the skin over the tumor area. The cloth is then covered with plastic wrap and a hot water bottle or hot pack is placed on top. The castor oil pack should be left on for at least an hour or more and can be repeated as often as necessary. This permits ricinoleic acid, one of the healing components of castor oil, to be absorbed directly into body tissues.

Hydration
Another important consideration when it comes to pain management, is to insure that the body is properly hydrated. Many cancer patients do not drink enough water, or they may consume beverages containing caffeine or alcohol which produce diuretic effects resulting in further loss of water. A dehydrated body will release histamine along with prostaglandins and kinins. Histamine is commonly associated with allergic reactions due to its ability to dilate capillaries and increase blood vessel permeability. Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that can stimulate contracitility of the smooth muscles in the body. Kinins are peptides that can act on smooth muscles and nerve endings. An increase in these substances can directly contribute to pain when they come in contact with the pain-sensing nerves in the body, or they indirectly cause pain by increasing inflammation. A minimum of ten to twelve glasses of water per day is necessary to maintain proper hydration and to assist the kidneys in eliminating toxins from the body. Several cups of herb teas should also be consumed in addition to the required amounts of water.

Massage…
Other alternative measures to help decrease pain and improve quality of life are massage and acupuncture. Massaging the cancer patient with extra virgin olive oil or castor oil is soothing to dry skin and the oils are quickly absorbed. Most patients also find massage to be very relaxing as well as helping to provide pain relief. Massaging toward the heart moves the lymphatic fluid and assists the body in removing accumulated toxins. Contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence proving that massage will spread your cancer….

Conclusion
Returning to the case study described above, this young man immediately began drinking fresh raw juices with the SuperFoods and started cleansing his colon. He also applied the castor oil pack on his abdomen over his liver area because that was the source of much of his intense pain. His family also massaged him with extra virgin olive oil, alternating with castor oil. After four weeks, he was not only still alive, but he was no longer vomiting, his color returned, and the swelling in his abdomen decreased considerably. But more important, he was completely free of pain. In fact, he had been able to wean himself entirely off the morphine, and no longer required any type of pain medication. This was a dramatic improvement in quality of life both for him and his family, who were no longer watching him suffer. Thoughts previously obsessed with dying were replaced with hope and living. His life was extended by several more pain-free months. One afternoon his mother called to thank me for helping her son, and to inform me that he died peacefully in his sleep with his family at his bedside.”

Colon Cleansing And Constipation

Posted by NatureDoc | Posted in Acne/Skin Remedies, Cleansing Colon, Detox, Foods That Heal, Herbs That Heal, Liver Health And Detox | Posted on 26-10-2008

Colon cleansing is well on its way to becoming a popular health routine, especially among health enthusiasts and people who are interested in alternative medicine. It is extremely beneficial for g a number of ailments like chronic constipation, acne, chronic fatigue, candida and almost all kinds of digestive tract problems– including build up of toxins.

Constipation may be experienced due to irritable bowel movements, excessive use of laxatives, too much worry, anxiety, fear, sedentary life stack or the lack of physical activity and problems with intestinal function (chronic idiopathic constipation). However, the most common causes of constipation are a diet low in fiber or a diet that is high in fats, such as cheese, eggs, and meat.

Bowel Friendly Foods

Grapes have proved highly beneficial in overcoming the occurrence of constipation. The combination of the properties of the cellulose sugar and organic acid in grapes make them a laxative food.

Fennel has properties in curing digestive problems. The regular use of fennel will normalize the working of the digestive system and heal the constipation problems. Fennel has exceptional properties in curing digestive problems. It is traditionally provided in Indian cuisine after each meal. It is also found in some commercial colon cleanses.

Fruit salad containing guava and papaya is advisable. It provides good roughage and clears your bowel system and prevents constipation. Fruits like papaya and guava are very beneficial in treating constipation. Regular intake of papaya at early morning on an empty stomach helps prevent constipation. Fruits are made by nature and are a perfect food. They contain the right balance of nutrients with distilled water.

Exercise

Exercise, or lack thereof, is seen as a cause of constipation because some believe that without regular exercise our metabolic rate slows, which means a longer digestive cycle and thus less regular bowel movement. Among other reasons the fact is, the longer the stool spends in your digestive system, the more water is excreted from the stool, which results in a harder stool which is more difficult and painful to pass.

Colon Cleanse

A good commercial colon cleanse will usually be plant based and will support intestinal detoxification with a combination of bulk fibers, natural laxative-like compounds, etc. For instance Psyllium husk and pectins supply essential fiber to the digestive tract, while herbs like Slippery Elm bark, Cascara Sagrada, and Marshmallow powder promote natural flushing in the colon.

In a nutshell bad eating habits, lack of exercise, not drinking enough water etc., lead to constipation, and the sooner these habits are dropped and corrective habits instituted, the sooner relief from constipation will be realized.

Prominent Scientist Warns of HPV Vaccine Dangers

Posted by NatureDoc | Posted in Cancer, Dangerous Drugs | Posted on 25-10-2008

Independent health researcher Grace Filby, who won a Churchill Fellowship for her research into phage therapy, is calling on the government for more research into the possible side-effects of the HPV vaccine that is currently being given to teenage girls. Filby believes that not enough is known about the effects of the vaccine on children with pre-existing medical conditions and weakened immune systems. She says, “We simply do not know whether the vaccine interacts with other medication or medical conditions, and the manufacturers have not studied it yet. This could be a very valid reason why some families and schools might hesitate or opt out.” She has this week written to UK education ministers and health officials calling for urgent small-scale independent studies that would highlight any health problems stemming from vaccinations already carried out. Warning: These Medicines Could Give You A Stroke!

Posted by NatureDoc | Posted in Dangerous Drugs | Posted on 24-10-2008

Below I have reprinted a testimony with extremely important and necessary information. I hope that it will help you…Remember “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.” Proverbs 3:13.

“My mother suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while she was driving home from my house on and died 3 days later. My mother’s stroke and passing was an enormous shock to my family because she did not have any symptoms or risk factors for a stroke. Just the week before she had gone to her doctor for a checkup and received a clean bill of health. She did, however, develop a cold while she was visiting me and had taken Alka Seltzer Cold Plus for 3 days. Since her passing, we have learned that Alka Seltzer is one of the many cold medicines that contains Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which can cause hemorrhagic stokes or cerebral bleeding even with the first use. I am forwarding a list of other medications that currently use PPA. These medicines are supposedly being recalled but my mother just purchased this medication less than two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger for years, we unfortunately, did not.I urge you to review the list of medicines with PPA and avoid these medications. All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Magnesium is a mineral that is ubiquitous in nature and is especially plentiful in green vegetables, cereal, grain, nuts, and legumes. It is the fourth most abundant mineral element in the human body, following calcium, sodium and potassium.

Magnesium is essential to the functioning of the human body because it transmits nerve impulses, causes the contraction of muscles and is integral to healthy development of teeth and bones. It is required for the proper function of approximately 300 enzymes in the human body. Functions as diverse as blood pressure regulation, muscle contraction, heart rhythm stabilization, and nervous system communication are all magnesium-dependent processes.

Magnesium participates in numerous life-essential processes that occur both inside and outside cells. It is a constituent of the chlorophyll in green plants and is necessary in the diet of animals and humans.

Magnesium is believed to relieve cerebral blood vessel spasm, increasing blood flow to the brain. Because magnesium is so helpful for the heart it should be an essential nutrient in helping to prevent hypertension before it begins and to treat it naturally without drugs. If magnesium were properly included in the mainstream medical approach to hypertension, it could possibly save people hundreds and health-care systems millions of dollars a year, not to mention lives. Interestingly studies have shown that between 6.9% and 11% of hospitalized patients and 65% of patients in intensive care units may have magnesium deficiency (Gullestad et al., 1991-1992; Klein, 1994).

Magnesium is vital for making sure that calcium is used properly by the body. Between 50% – 60% of magnesium in the body is found in bone. It also helps the body break down carbohydrates and control insulin and is even sometimes used to treat symptoms of constipation in irritable bowel syndrome sufferers. However it should be noted that magnesium supplements are not the same as milk of magnesia.

Commenting on the effectiveness of magnesium when combined with the mineral calcium for PMS symptoms Dr. Emily Kane writes: “The other critical PMS nutrient is magnesium, 400-800 mg daily, best at night. Magnesium is not only a highly effective smooth muscle relaxant and gentle laxative, it is also required for the formation of the brain chemicals dopamine, GABA and serotonin. Deficiencies of each of these neurotransmitters have been implicated in some symptoms of PMS, particularly depression. Magnesium deficiency, more common in women with increased levels of stress, is known to cause water retention and depression. Magnesium also helps to control blood sugar fluctuations, and plays an essential role in fat metabolism.”

Finally, I have seen the calcium/magnesium combo work in about 20 minutes for severe menstrual cramps pain, and it is highly recommended.

4 Amazing Herbs For Menopause

Posted by NatureDoc | Posted in Herbs That Heal, Hormones and Heealth, Menopause, Uncategorized, Weight Loss | Posted on 22-10-2008

Herbs for menopause? Herbs for menopause can be just what you are looking for. Many plants have medicinal properties that reduce menopausal symptoms. For example soy is an excellent source of healthy plant estrogens. Soy has been recommended for female health for years as a means to stabilize and maintain hormonal harmony as well as promote breast health and female reproductive health. In fact, there are many reliable herbs for menopause that can help to maintain a healthy life without the symptoms of menopause.

Black Cohosh is probably the most well known herb that is used during the menopause years. Some doctors are now suggesting it for their patients who want more natural relief from menopausal symptoms. Black Cohosh helps to regulate estrogen and decrease luteinizing hormone to help alleviate these symptoms. Black Cohosh has been studied mostly in Germany, where it is used to treat hot flashes. Experiments have shown that the herb has substances that bind to estrogen receptors in animal models and lower pituitary hormones in both animals and humans. It is among the few natural herbs for menopause that have shown a positive effect for the women undergoing this difficult stage in life. It will relieve hot flashes, night sweats, and mild mood changes

Dong Quai

Dong Quai is a herb used in traditional Chinese medicine as a tonic for the female reproductive system. Dong Quai is used by natural practitioners to increase blood flow, and thereby help relieve hot flashes and lubricate the vagina. Another great feature of Dong Quai is that it has properties that can also help ease menopausal rheumatism. It is also rich in magnesium which can help to deepen sleep disturbed by night sweats. Dong Quai has shown itself effective to many women, alleviating and reducing the symptoms of menopause. Donq Quai also relieves some of the symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and acts as a general tonic for the female reproductive system.

Red Clover

Red clover contains a hormone like substance and this has been known to help curb some menopause symptoms, red clover may also be beneficial for preventing osteoporosis due to its weak estrogenic effects.

WILD YAM

Wild yam is also an option, which can be found in many types of progesterone creams. For this, women experience fewer and less intense hot flashes, the number one complaint among menopausal women. Wild Yam extract is a very beneficial herb for women and works synergistically with progesterone USP, but don’t be fooled by formulations that are only Wild Yam.

WHY THEY WORK

Phytoestrogenic herbs (like Black Cohosh) are filled with phytoestrogens, which are similar to estrogens. They can increase low estrogen levels by replacing some of the missing estrogen hormones. Phytoestrogens are estrogens that are in some foods. These are of two varieties–lignans and isoflavones. Phytoestrogen herbs are those that contain estrogenic properties that helps produce estrogen in a woman’s body like Black Cohosh and Dong Quai. Finally there are other helpful herbs that can be used, especially when correctly combined that will produce great benefit.

Niacin is actually the granddaddy of cholesterol-lowering drugs. In its natural chemical make-up it works well in reducing overall cholesterol with increased HDL– the good cholesterol. In fact nicotinic acid raises HDL cholesterol more than other lipid-lowering medicines. Nicotinic acid and niacinamide are closely related forms of niacin, the B vitamin.

Niacin was the first medication to lower cholesterol levels (1955), the first to reduce heart attacks (1984), and the first to lower long-term mortality rates (1986). It is particularly helpful in promoting healthy cholesterol levels. A normal function of niacin is to help remove fats (triglycerides) from tissues and the bloodstream.

Flushing–Common Side Effects

The most common side effects include flushing, prickling, and extreme warmth of the skin. Flushing is increased when taken with hot beverages. Flushing is not harmful, but it can be annoying. Nicotinic acid (but not nicotinamide) given in drug dosage improves the blood cholesterol profile, and has been used to clear the body of organic poisons, such as certain insecticides.

Non-Flushing Niacin

Studies have reported significant lipid-lowering effects of non-flushing niacin. Researchers found non-flushing niacin to be more effective than niacin in its cholesterol lowering, blood pressure lowering and lipotropic effects.

 Cholesterol Drugs
Studies also shown that some other drugs formulated to lower cholesterol(statins) may lead to acute renal failure. Prolonged use of these drugs has also been associated with the inflammation of the pancreas. Health writer, Mike Adams, reported on a story in August 2006 writing, “Patients taking Lipitor — the best-selling cholesterol medicine in the world with 22 million users — began suing Pfizer in June, alleging that the negative physical side effects such as muscle pain, nerve damage, nightmares, memory loss and other central nervous system problems were not properly explained when they were prescribed the drug.”

Although supplements like Niacin help there are other determining factors as well. One recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that by simply eating certain foods you can lower your cholesterol levels just as well as taking statin (cholesterol) drugs. In this American Journal of Clinical Nutrition cited study researchers discovered that foods such as “soy protein, tofu, various other soy products plus almonds and cereal fiber, as well as plant sterols, can lower total cholesterol and especially, LDL cholesterol better than statin drugs. So if you want to get started in reducing your cholesterol level, start eating a healthy diet and start exercising.
