Cold and flu season is upon us and the push is starting for vaccination….but is it necessary? Conventional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry would have us believe that there is no “cure” for the common cold, that you should protect yourself against the flu with a vaccine that is laden with toxic chemicals, and that during the midst of a cold or flu, it is favorable to ease your discomfort with a variety of medications that can suppress your symptoms.

All three of these positions represent a basic lack of understanding of what colds and flus really are, and what they mean to your body.

Colds and flus are caused by viruses…thus no drug, antibiotic or otherwise, is going to cure either a cold or a flu. So to understand what colds and flus do at a cellular level, you have to understand what viruses do at a cellular level.

Viruses are different from your cells in that they lack the ability to duplicate themselves through mitosis and cytokinesis. Viruses are simply microscopic particles of genetic material, coated by a thin layer of protein.

The only way that viruses can flourish in your body is by using the machinery and metabolism of your cells to produce multiple copies of themselves.

Once a virus has acquired admittance into one of your cells, depending on the type of virus in question, one of two things can come about:

1. The virus uses your cell’s resources to replicate itself many times over and then bursts (lyses) the cell so that the newly replicated viruses can go forth in search of new cells to infect and destroy. Lysis effectively kills your cell.

2. The virus integrates itself into the DNA of your cell; this allows the virus to be distributed to each daughter cell that stems from this cell. Subsequently, the virus in each daughter cell can begin replicating as pointed out in the first example. Once multiple copies of the virus have been brought about, the cell is lysed.

Either possibility leads to the same result: at length, the contaminated cell can perish as a result of lysis. Now consider the crux to understanding why colds and flus, when allowed to run their course while you rest, can be good for you: Generally, the viruses that cause the common cold as well as flu infect chiefly your feeblest cells; cells that are already saddled with excessive waste products and toxins are most probable to allow viruses to infect them. Thus a cold or flu is in reality a natural tool, a natural healing crisis that can allow your body to flush itself of old and damaged cells that, in without viral infection, would normally take much longer to identify, destroy, and eradicate.

It is of course ideal to keep the body as free of excess toxins as possible in the first place, but in the event you get a cold … get lots of rest drink plenty of pure water and make sure you are properly nourished during a cold or flu, especially with herbal remedies. If I had a cold or the flu I would not get vaccinated nor would I consume medications that suppress congested sinuses, fever, coughing etc. These symptoms, although uncomfortable, are in reality the agencies in which the body acts to eliminate waste products and thus return you to health.

As mentioned earlier it is far better to prevent a cold or flu than it is to have to try and treat it after it has already set in. Thus by taking care of your overall health and especially your immune system…i.e., by getting plenty of rest, sunshine, fresh air, exercise, pure water, and systematically making health-promoting dietary choices, your cells could remain impregnable enough to avoid becoming infected by viruses.

IS IT A COLD OR THE FLU?

A cold typically advances step by step — over the course of a day or two. Commonly, it causes you to feel tired, sneeze, cough and have a stuffy and /or a running nose. Frequently you will not have a fever, but if you do end up with one, it’s merely somewhat higher than normal. Colds ordinarily hang around 3-4 days, but can hang around longer…as long as 10 days to 2 weeks.

Influenza, however, comes on suddenly and hits hard. There is weakness and the sufferer is tired and might run a very high fever. The muscles and joints usually ache, there is a chill and often times a severe headache and sore throat. The fever might last 3-5 days, but the weakness could remain for weeks!
