There exists an epidemic of early onset cognitive decay and Alzheimer’s disease in the American public. This is a public health problem that will continue to grow worse as those called “baby boomers” enter their 60s. However, one study shows there is a simple, and no cost way for you to preclude this problem. What is that?… exercise .

Researchers analyzed mice that had been genetically altered to produce amyloid plaque and hence produce Alzheimer’s disease. The mice were put on an exercise treadmill for four months. The results turned out to be amazing.

“1) Factors relating to the formation of amyloid plaque were significantly decreased.
2) Exercise turned off multiple gene signals that induce brain cell death.
3) The important nerve repair compound, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was elevated, protecting against new brain cell damage and helping to restore antioxidant function in brain cells.
4) The stress defense system of brain cells was improved, meaning they had an overall better ability to tolerate stress.
5) The exercise also benefited total cholesterol, insulin and glucose levels.”

Boost Your Metabolism

If there was a drug that could perform any one of these things, without harmful side effects, it would be a smash hit. Yet, every one of these benefits can be achieved by simple aerobic exercise.

The authors of the study declared, “Taken together, these results suggest that exercise training represents a practical therapeutic strategy for human subjects suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, this training has the potential for use in new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of other chronic disease including diabetes, cardiovascular and Parkinson’s disease.”

This study documents, although in animals, clear biochemistry at the gene level explaining how exercise works to preserve your mind.

Byron J. Richards commenting on this study says: “This study lends support to a 20-year human study on running that I reported on in August…that study also found that participants had far less cognitive decline – now we know why.”

In writing about that study Richards continues, “A 20-year study has shown that running has profound health benefits, cutting the rate of early death by more than half. Researchers found that running slowed cardiovascular disease, cancer deaths, cognitive decline, and poor immunity. The runners experienced no more wear and tear to their joints than non-runners.”
