Andropause is the male equivalent of the female menopause that usually affects men between the ages of 40 and 55. The word Andropause is from the Greek, andro (male), and pausis (stop), and represents the midlife decrease of androgens, DHEA, and in particular, testosterone, the key player in male hormonal health and balance. Andropause is a syndrome wherein a man’s testosterone gradually drops to a level that he begins to lose some of his male characteristics. Although this process typically begins in the 40s it becomes most pronounced in the 60s. Some 30% of males over 65 have low testosterone levels with the associated muscle weakness, memory loss, and loss of libido.

Andropause is diagnosed with a blood test by a physician that reveals testosterone levels below a certain level. If a diagnosis of andropause is warranted, treatment with testosterone replacement may be an option, depending on a man’s health history.

While medical professionals have known for a long time that the production of hormones by the testes slowly decreases as men age, interest has developed only recently in the clinical implications of andropause. Andropause is in effect the reverse of puberty. It is often under diagnosed because symptoms can be vague and can vary a lot among individuals. Many men find it difficult to even admit that there’s a problem.

Symptoms and findings of testosterone deficiency are similar to those associated with aging. Andropause symptoms may include loss of energy, depressed mood, possible decrease in cognitive decline, decreased libido , potential erectile dysfunction , decreased muscle mass and strength, increased fat mass, frailty, osteopenia, and osteoporosis.

Symptom improvement might include improved psychosexual function, physical activity, quality of life, and overall mood.

REMEDY

In correcting Andropause DHEA will play a prominent role. It is a steroid hormone mostly produced in the adrenal glands. DHEA
is usually used for at least the first week at about 50-75mg per day. DHEA supplementation for men suffering from male menopause symptoms will likely result in the male looking, acting, thinking and feeling better. However, there are other herb, amino acids etc., which when combined with a healthy diet and overall lifestyle can work wonders.
