Cholesterol is a soft, wax-like substance found in all parts of the body In fact, your body needs a little bit of cholesterol to work properly. The cholesterol in a person’s blood originates from two major sources; dietary intake and liver production. Cholesterol is more abundant in tissues which either synthesize more or have more abundant densely-packed membranes, for example, the liver, spinal cord and brain. It plays a central role in many biochemical processes, such as the composition of cell membranes and the synthesis of steroid hormones.

The body uses cholesterol to produce many hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat. Cholesterol is required to build and maintain cell membranes; it regulates membrane fluidity over a wide range of temperatures. The liver produces about 1 gram of cholesterol per day through the bile, which contains cholesterol.

Therefore we hear of the good cholesterol (HDL) and the bad cholesterol (LDL).

Cholesterol is a major ingredient of the plaque that collects in the coronary arteries and causes CHD, so it is important to understand how plaques develop. Excess cholesterol is deposited in the artery walls as it travels through the bloodstream.

However it should be recognized that a very compelling argument can be made that the problem is not so much cholesterol itself, but the source of the cholesterol, and the abused shape of the arteries that make it necessary for the cholesterol to act as a “band-aid” to damaged arteries.

Cholesterol is simply seeping into unhealthy arteries and sticking, not because of the levels of cholesterol, but because of the poor conditions of the arterial walls.

Cholesterol Foods

Cholesterol is found in foods from animal sources. This means that eggs, meats, and whole-fat dairy products (including milk, cheese, and ice cream) are loaded with cholesterol – -and vegetables, fruits, and grains contain none. All foods of animal origin contain cholesterol—

“And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.” Proverbs 23:2
 Cholesterol-Reducing foods
Cholesterol-lowering foods include those containing plant sterols, plant stanols, or soluble fiber. Foods fortified with plant sterols or stanols help block absorption of cholesterol from the diet.

Combined with exercise and correct eating habits there are remedies that can greatly heal cholesterol problems.

Lecithin protects cells from oxidation and largely comprises the protective sheaths surrounding the brain. It is composed mostly of B vitamins, phosphoric acid, choline, linoleic acid and inositol. Lecithin is beneficial in case of increase in cholesterol level. It has the ability to break up cholesterol into small particles which can be easily handled by the system.

Garlic is known to act as a blood thinner and may reduce other risk factors for heart disease. For these reasons, some doctors recommend eating garlic as food, taking 900 mg of garlic powder from capsules, or using a tincture of 2 to 4 ml, taken three times daily.

There are also natural substances such as niacin that can help with cholesterol problems.
