According to University of Reading scientists eating blueberries can reverse memory loss and may have implications in the treatment of diseases like Alzheimer’s….
Â
Scientists found adding foods like blueberries to a regular diet, led to enhancements in memory.
Â
The foods, known as flavonoids, were traditionally thought to act as antioxidants in human bodies. However, the study suggests they also turn on the part of the brain which controls learning and memory.
Dr Jeremy Spencer, from the dept. of food biosciences at the University, declared: “Scientists have known of the potential health advantages of diets loaded in fresh fruits for a while.
“Our research provides systematic proof to show that blueberries are good for you and supports the idea a diet-based approach could doubtless be used to extend memory capacity.
“We will be taking these findings to a higher level by looking into the aftermath of diets rich in flavonoids on people afflicted by cognitive impairment and presumably Alzheimer’s disease.”
This study has been made public in the Free Radical Biology and Drugs book.
Blue Berries Slash Cancer Risk
A compound found in blueberries shows guarantee of stopping colon cancer, according to a new report.
Â
Scientists at Rutgers University and the US Office of Agriculture conducted a joint study on animals, and revealed that the compound — called pterostilbene — reduced pre-cancerous wounds and inhibited genes concerned in inflammation.
“This study underscores the need to include more berries in the diet, especially blueberries,” said study leader Bandaru Reddy, Ph.D., a professor in the chemical biology department at Rutgers. Though the blueberry compound won’t cure colon cancer, it represents a tactic for stopping the illness naturally, declared Reddy, who focuses on studying the connection between nourishment and colon cancer.
