The nation’s Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has declared the early cancellation of one part of a major diabetes and heart illness study after discovering that patients undergoing that treatment were much more likely to die from coronaries and strokes.
The Action to manage Heart Risk in Diabetes ( ACCORD ) study included 10,251 adults with Type two diabetes who were thought to be at particularly high risk of coronaries and strokes.
One of the treatments in the study concerned using mixes of FDA-approved diabetes drugs to aggressively lower participants’ blood sugar to levels as near to standard as feasible. “Of these, 257 in the radical treatment group have died, compared to 203 in the standard treatment group,” the NIH claimed. The NIH recounted that it doesn’t know what led to the increased risk of death among patients undergoing in depth treatment, but it doesn’t believe the risk came from any individual drug or blend of drugs. Rather, there would appear to be some negative effect on the body from so aggressively lowering blood sugar levels.
“This presents a genuine quandary to patients and their physicians,” recounted Richard Kahn, chief systematic and medical officer for the Yank Diabetes organization.
