Vegetable intake by itself – when analyzed separately from fruit intake – was clearly found to be protective against Benign Prostate Enlargement (BPH). This vegetable intake increased in its health value when the vegetables involved were rich sources of vitamin C or some of the carotenoid nutrients (beta-carotene, lutein, or zeaxanthin). Vegetables like broccoli are helpful in the prevention of heart disease and cancer. This veggie is loaded with vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium and sulphoraphane, which protects against prostate and colon cancers.

Lycopene

Lycopene works as an antioxidant and it may help reduce DNA damage that occurs from toxins and oxidants. Furthermore, lycopene inhibits prostatic IGF-I signaling, IL-6 expression (interleukin), and androgen signaling. Lycopene is also an antioxidant.

Antioxidants are natural cancer-fighting agents found in fruits, vegetables, tea, and soy. Lycopene and other carotenoids serve as a key source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or delay the oxidation of other substances and may protect against chronic disease (Institute of Medicine, 2000 p 35-57).

Lycopene is a phytochemical that is found in certain fruits and vegetables like tomatoes and grapefruits. Tomatoes also contain significant quantities of potassium, as well as some vitamin A and vitamin E.

One of Lycopene’s major functions in the body is protection from prostate cancer. Lycopene, like other carotenoids, is fat-soluble, which means it is not well absorbed without fat.

Vitamin D

Studies suggest that activated vitamin D may be broken down in the prostate, where it may play a role in preventing cancer…

Studies have shown that a particularly active form of vitamin D known as 1,25(OH)2D3 can protect against growth of prostate cancer cells. However, increased intake of calcium lowers the vitamin D levels in the body, and therefore minimizes its protective effects.

Studies from Harvard School of public Health show that men who drink more than four glasses of milk a day have low blood levels of vitamin D, and are at increased risk for prostate cancer.

Calcium uses up vitamin D and not enough vitamin D is added to milk to cover the extra calcium used.

It has been suggested that Vitamin D may be more protective against aggressive (advanced-stage) than non-aggressive prostate cancer. Also, the optimal level of vitamin D to confer protection against prostate cancer is not known.
