Dandelion Root is a perennial plant which is mild and is often used safely by those with chronic constipation.A tea made with Dandelion Root can be taken up to four times daily as it is not a harsh laxative.
Dandelion Root is also used as a natural diuretic that helps to increase the bile and gastric secretions.
The herb is also used to improve appetite, minor digestive problems, and works as a milk laxative.
It is potassium-rich and as a result is used to help promote healthy heart function. It is thought to help heart function due to its potassium content working with sodium to regulate the body’s water balance and normalize heart rhythms.
Potassium-rich Dandelion has been called the “free health food pharmacy” that grows everywhere! In fact, not only the root but the leaves are also considered to be a superior natural diuretic, good blood cleanser and excellent tonic that can help detoxify the system, especially the liver and gallbladder.
In one instance a leaf extract was found to exert a stronger diuretic effect in rats and mice than did a root extract
The esteemed Dr. John Christopher even mentioned the efficacy of Dandelion Root when combined with the herb Yellow Dock as a good source of usable iron for the body. He wrote;
“Anemia may be caused by iron deficiency or other problems. Iron supplements are commonly given to expectant mothers, yet these are usually made of ferrous sulphate and cannot be utilized by the body. Being inorganic, they are absorbed but not assimilated and can cause problems in the system. In addition, they destroy vitamin E that may be taken at the same time. You can build up the iron in your system by taking yellow dock or the yellow dock combination. Some midwives say that yellow dock alone doesn’t help for very long; its effect sometimes wears off. I have had excellent results combining yellow dock root and dandelion root; dandelion contains an excellent spectrum of minerals that enhance the 40% iron content of the yellow dock.” The Complete Writings Of Dr. John Christopher
Finally while most people today find Dandelion bothersome as a weed, dandelion enjoys a long history in traditional herbal medicine.
