Is High-Fructose Corn Syrup Setting You Up For Diabetes?

keith-picture4High-fructose corn syrup first appeared in the American market in 1966, and now the average American takes in 62.6 pounds per year. High-fructose corn syrup is made from altered corn starch.  It  is a 50-50 blend of free glucose and fructose molecules. The only difference between them is that sucrose has to be partially digested (in the small intestine) before it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

High-fructose corn syrup being  made up of about 50 percent fructose and 50 percent glucose, is interesting  because this is the ratio which the Corn Refiners Association says is about the same composition of table sugar or sucrose.

High-fructose corn syrup is  found in most sodas and many other processed foods.

Fructose is much more readily metabolized to fat in the liver than glucose, and in the process can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This then  leads to hepatic insulin resistance and eventually type II diabetes.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup And Diabetes

The most recent studies and   latest statistics, reveal that over the past decade new cases of diabetes have increased by a whopping 90%, and more than that…1 in 4 Americans is pre-diabetic or diabetic!

“There’s no doubt in my mind that one of the primary fuels for this epidemic is the excess consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Several studies over the past few years have also come to this conclusion, including this latest study in Cell Metabolism” notes  Dr. Joseph Mercola.

Products such as candy bars, bread, pizza sauce, and fruit drinks just to name a few contain HFCS. Products include baked goods, cereals, fast food, candy, dairy products like chocolate milk, jelly, salad dressings like ranch, juice etc. Nearly every processed food item on the shelf and fast food item on the menu, and in the vending machines in our schools contain  high fructose corn syrup…
