How Laughter Is An Amazing Medicine To The Body Part 1

The Bible records the words of the wise King Solomon, when he declared… “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” 17:22.

This statement is astonishingly accurate! In this statement we see the emotions of happiness and joy contrasted with the emotions of sadness and gloom, and the effect that each renders upon the body.

In this post we will however look upon the “medicine of laughter”.

University of Maryland Says Laughter Helps Arteries

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore were able to demonstrate that laughter is linked to healthy function of blood vessels.

“Laughter appears to cause the tissue that forms the inner lining of blood vessels, the endothelium, to dilate or expand in order to increase blood flow.” the school pointed out in a press release.

Incidentally when the same group of study volunteers were allowed to watch a movie that produced mental stress, their blood vessel lining developed a potentially unhealthy response called vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow….this confirmed earlier studies that established that stress causes a narrowing of the blood vessels.

According to researchers the magnitude of change that occurred in the endothelium of the blood vessels was similar to the benefit that might be seen with aerobic activity! However the researchers do not recommend attempting to replace exercise with laughter—but rather add more frequent laughter for additional benefit.

Confirms Results Of An Earlier Study At The University

An earlier study at the University, also published in a press release, found that “laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect you against a heart attack.”

The researchers found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to people of the same age without heart disease!

In this study Michael Miller, M.D., F.A.C.C., director of the Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center declared…

“We don’t know yet why laughing protects the heart, but we know that mental stress is associated with impairment of the endothelium, the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This can cause a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to fat and cholesterol build-up in the coronary arteries and ultimately to a heart attack”.

Indeed it seems that “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” 17:22.

Stay tuned for part 2

a-keith-picture

Fenugreek is a bitter herb that is used to increase milk-flow, stimulate the uterus, soothe irritated tissues, lower fever, reduce blood sugar, improve digestion, promote healing, and as a laxative, expectorant, diuretic, anti-parasitic and anti-tumor agent.

Fenugreek sprouts are also used to promote hair growth, especially in men.

The seeds are rich in mucilage (glactomannans), lipids, protein, and protease inhibitors. Various steroid saponins are present (aglycone),
furostanol glycosides, small amounts of alkaloid and steroidal peptide.

FENUGREEKFOR DIABETES

Fenugreek seeds contain alkaloids, The seeds also contain fiber, and fenugreekine, a component that may have hypoglycemic activity.

Fenugreek may also increase the number ofinsulin receptors in red blood cells and improve glucose utilization inperipheral tissues, thus demonstrating potential anti-diabetes effects both in
the pancreas and other sites. The amino acid 4- hydroxyisoleucine, contained inthe seeds, may also directly stimulate insulin secretion.

In one study, published in a 1990 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 10 patients on insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes were assigned to either placebo or 50 grams of defatted fenugreek-seed powder twice daily in addition to their insulin therapy.

Fasting glucose decreased from an average of 272 mg/dl at baseline to 196 mg/dl. There was also a decrease in total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides.

A larger study, published in a 1996 issue of Nutrition Research, involved a six-month trial of Fenugreek in 60 patients with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes. Twenty-five grams of powdered Fenugreek seed was given twice daily at lunch and dinner in addition to the current diabetes therapy.

The average fasting glucose decreased from151 mg/dl to 112 mg/dl after 6 months. Glucose values one and two hours after meals also declined. Average A1C decreased from 9.6% to 8.4% after eight weeks.

Fenugreek Increases Milk Production

Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply.  Scientists do not know for sure how this happens.  Some believe it is possible becausebreasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production.  It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother’s milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast
stimulation.

FENUGREEK HELPS ABSCESSED TEETH

“Fenugreek steeped into a tea / mouthwash cured abscessed teeth. I rinsed my mouth and then soaked a gauze pad and placed in in my mouth for an hour at a time and it drew the infection out of my system. Sometimes I had to open a little hole in my gums so it would drain. I had 10 abscessed teeth at one time and did this for many months. It helped me alot as I didn’t have any medical coverage to go to a dentist myself. I still to this day recommend this to anyone with the same problem.” Testimony from Jeanne Rouyn – Noranda, Quebec, CANADA

There are many other uses for Fenugreek, in fact it is one of the most efficacious herbs to use and it is highly recommended.

keith-pictureStressed out…The Herb Eleuthero (also known as Siberian ginseng) just might be your answer.

Siberian ginseng is a very popular herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is also known as- Eleutherococcus senticosus, or Eleuthero (Formerly known as Siberian ginseng, a name banned in the United States by the Ginseng Labeling Act of 2002).

For Stress:

Eleuthero is an “adaptogen,” an agent that helps the body address to stress. Scientists believe it helps prevent “adrenal burnout” caused by ongoing physical or mental challenges. Eleuthero boosts concentration and focus without the letdown than comes from drinking coffee or other sources of caffeine.

Eleuthero supplements are made from the root. The root contains a mixture of components, common to many plants but occurring together in Eleuthero.

These remarkable compounds favorably affect the adrenal glands. Thus by supporting healthy adrenal gland function, Siberian Ginseng helps the body to adapt to stress.

Clinical Trials

Eleuthero extract has been administered to more than 2,100 healthy human subjects in clinical trials for purpose of evaluating its adaptogenic effects.

These studies indicated that Siberian ginseng/or Eleuthero increased the ability of humans to withstand the many adverse physical conditions such as heat, noise, workload increase, exercise, and decompression.

Eleuthero or Siberian Ginseng is held in high esteem in China, where it has been valued for thousands of years. It contains niacin, amino acids, carbohydrates, as well as calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, barium, iron, strontium, boron, copper, manganese, chromium, cobalt, germanium and zinc.

Because ginseng both restores and fortifies the body, damaged tissues are encouraged to heal.

Other Uses For Eleuthero

Eleuthero is not only used for stress and fatigue, but is also believed to be helpful for a number of maladies including atherosclerosis, ulcerative colitis, and impaired kidney function. It is believed (based on a few Russian studies) that the active components in Siberian ginseng are superior to the other types.

Blood Pressure

It is thought to help regulate blood pressure by normalizing arterial pressure and measuring arterial wall elasticity. When it is too low it will raise blood pressure and lower it when it is too high.

Memory/Concentration

Eleuthero is used to restore memory, concentration and cognitive abilities which may be impaired by improper blood supply to the brain.

Infections

Eleuthero has been used for preventing colds and flu, and for reducing the severity of herpes simplex virus type 2 infections. It is specifically indicated for people with immune-depression, fatigue, and a lack of vitality and perhaps those who get sick a lot. Unlike the herb Echinacea, it is not an immune stimulant, rather, it is an immune enhancer and helps restore optimum functioning in the immune system.

Conclusion

So if you are stressed out….like so many people are, you might want to consider Eleuthero…formally known in the U.S. at least, as Siberian Ginseng.

It is certainly true… that the Creator “causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man:” Psalms 104:14
