Fenugreek is a bitter herb that is used to increase milk-flow, stimulate the uterus, soothe irritated tissues, lower fever, reduce blood sugar, improve digestion, promote healing, and as a laxative, expectorant, diuretic, anti-parasitic and anti-tumor agent.
Fenugreek sprouts are also used to promote hair growth, especially in men.
The seeds are rich in mucilage (glactomannans), lipids, protein, and protease inhibitors. Various steroid saponins are present (aglycone),
furostanol glycosides, small amounts of alkaloid and steroidal peptide.
FENUGREEKFOR DIABETES
Fenugreek seeds contain alkaloids, The seeds also contain fiber, and fenugreekine, a component that may have hypoglycemic activity.
Fenugreek may also increase the number ofinsulin receptors in red blood cells and improve glucose utilization inperipheral tissues, thus demonstrating potential anti-diabetes effects both in
the pancreas and other sites. The amino acid 4- hydroxyisoleucine, contained inthe seeds, may also directly stimulate insulin secretion.
In one study, published in a 1990 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 10 patients on insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes were assigned to either placebo or 50 grams of defatted fenugreek-seed powder twice daily in addition to their insulin therapy.
Fasting glucose decreased from an average of 272 mg/dl at baseline to 196 mg/dl. There was also a decrease in total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides.
A larger study, published in a 1996 issue of Nutrition Research, involved a six-month trial of Fenugreek in 60 patients with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes. Twenty-five grams of powdered Fenugreek seed was given twice daily at lunch and dinner in addition to the current diabetes therapy.
The average fasting glucose decreased from151 mg/dl to 112 mg/dl after 6 months. Glucose values one and two hours after meals also declined. Average A1C decreased from 9.6% to 8.4% after eight weeks.
Fenugreek Increases Milk Production
Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply. Scientists do not know for sure how this happens. Some believe it is possible becausebreasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production. It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother’s milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast
stimulation.
FENUGREEK HELPS ABSCESSED TEETH
“Fenugreek steeped into a tea / mouthwash cured abscessed teeth. I rinsed my mouth and then soaked a gauze pad and placed in in my mouth for an hour at a time and it drew the infection out of my system. Sometimes I had to open a little hole in my gums so it would drain. I had 10 abscessed teeth at one time and did this for many months. It helped me alot as I didn’t have any medical coverage to go to a dentist myself. I still to this day recommend this to anyone with the same problem.” Testimony from Jeanne Rouyn – Noranda, Quebec, CANADA
There are many other uses for Fenugreek, in fact it is one of the most efficacious herbs to use and it is highly recommended.
“He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth” Psalms 104:14
