“A student movement has recently taken form at Harvard Medical School, demanding widespread reform of the school’s conflict-of-interest policies. The movement was sparked by a number of high-profile scandals in which Harvard medical faculty were revealed to have concealed hundreds of thousands of dollars in pharmaceutical company gifts, sparking a Senate investigation. This was followed by the American Medical Student Association giving the school an F grade for its conflict-of-interest disclosure policies.” writes David Gutierrez in his article, Harvard Medical School Professors are Paid Big Bucks by Big Pharma to Push Meds.
Gutierrez quoted one student, first-year medical student David Tian, as saying “Before coming here, I had no idea how much influence companies had on medical education”.
As a result of the student movement, the school has agreed to make it mandatory that e all professors and lecturers inform the students of any financial ties that they have to the drug industry.
Astonishingly, one professor disclosed 47 financial relationships. Now only that “1,600 of 8,900 teachers have reported at least one financial relationship in an area related to their teaching, research or medical practice.”
Is The Influence Of The Drug Companies Making Us Sick?
Health researcher, Mike Adams, points out an interesting study wherein he pointed out that “Researchers sent a group of people, who said they saw the drug Paxil in a TV advertisement, into doctors’ offices. Many of these patients didn’t even show signs of depression, but when they named the drug, 50 percent were diagnosed as having depression, and 55 percent were given a prescription for the exact prescription drug they named.”
As a matter of fact, according to Adams when people named Paxil, they were more than five times more likely to be given a prescription for it than someone who didn’t name the drug by name! “This simple experiment”, he writes “demonstrates how many doctors are puppets of the pharmaceutical industry; they’re glorified drug dealers.”
