Enzymes…A Few Thoughts On Digestive Enzymes

Welcome back!

Enzymes are proteins produced by living organisms that accelerate chemical reactions. They, for example, work inside the human digestive system to break starch or protein molecules into smaller pieces that can be absorbed by the intestines. They are part of a group of proteins known as amino acids and are found in all living things.

Enzymes are produced from living cells – typically microorganisms. They are the tools of nature, with all kinds of biological material and kick-starting key biological processes. They are natural catalysts which are present in all living organisms. This means that all the functions of living organisms are inextricably linked to the activity of enzymes.

Enzymes are necessary for digestion, for battling viruses, and for dissolving bacteria. However, when enzymes are being diverted to your digestive tract to aid in the digestion of cooked food, there is less enzyme potential to fight off illness and disease.

Enzymes Have Specific Jobs

Enzymes are substrate specific. The enzyme peptidase (which breaks peptide bonds in proteins) will not work on starch (which is broken down by human-produced amylase in the mouth). Enzymes are very efficient . An enzyme generally can typically catalyze between 1 and 10,000 molecules of substrate per second. Enzymes are energized protein molecules found in all living cells. They catalyze and regulate all biochemical reactions that occur within the human body.

The Enzymes in the stomach – called gastric enzymes – are specially designed to function in the stomach’s extremely acid conditions and are critical to our health. These enzymes are not automatically destroyed by the acids or temperatures in our digestive tract. Enzymes are fundamental to all biological processes.

Enzymes are commonly named by adding a suffix “-ase” to the root name of the substrate molecule it is acting upon. For example, Lipase catalyzes the hydrolysis of a lipid triglyceride.

Digestion And Enzymes Crucial To Health

Digestive enzymes, both found in raw foods and produced by our bodies, break down food particles so they can be absorbed. Enzymes that can break down food are present in food but the heat from cooking and processing kills them (including pasteurization in the case of milk). Digestive enzymes are secreted by the pancreas and break down foods, allowing their nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream and used in body functions. They ensure that we get the greatest possible nutritional value from foods.
