U.S. citizens spend virtually a 3rd as much cash out-of pocket on herbal aides and other alternative drugs as they do on pharmaceuticals, a government report revealed earlier this year. Out-of-pocket spending on herbal supplements/vitamins etc., chiropractic visits, meditation, and different kinds of complementary and alternative drugs ( CAM ) was predicted at $34 billion in a single year.
The guesstimate was based primarily on replies to a nationwide health survey conducted in 2007 by the CDC's National Center For Health Stats. ( NCHS ). The bottom line is that US citizens spend plenty of money on CAM products, classes, materials and practitioner visits, said NCCAM Director Josephine P Briggs, MD, in a media lecture. Overall out-of-pocket expenditures for complementary and alternative drugs accounted for 1.5% of the $2.2 trillion spent on medical care in the year before the survey. Other highlights from the report, released by NCHS and NCAAM, include:. Two thirds of the out-of-pocket spending was for treatments that didn't involve a specialist ,eg over the counter herbal treatments and other treatments, classes and materials. About $12 billion was spent on visits to practitioners like chiropractic specialists, acupuncturists, and homeopathic consultants. Formerly reported figures primarily based on the same state survey showed clearly that 38% of adults and 12% of youngsters younger than the age of 18 used some form of alternative drugs in 2007.
It was reported in November 2009 by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine that more than 33 billion dollars was spent on complementary and alternative medicine products and services. Not only that,but this was out of pocket.
