health and fitness tips for 2011

Keith Henry, N.D.

Below I have reprinted the contents of a newsletter that I receive from health educator Danny Vierra. The principles that he has outlined below are excellent and  if followed you will certainly benefit health wise in the upcoming  year.

Here are some wonderful health guidelines for you to practice in 2011. We are closer to Christ’s coming then ever before, and we need to get in the best shape as possible so we can share the health message with the world and the church. There is no better way of convincing people of God’s health program then by living out the principles in your own life. As people notice your health and energy and see the glow of health on your face, they will want to know what you are doing. Here are the guidelines for 2011 that you can share with them.

1. Eat a whole plant food diet with lots of organic fruits and vegetables from the garden. I always say, “Eat rainbows.” Remember that even the color of the plants have healing power. Such as the red pigment in tomatoes known as lycopene can help preventing prostate cancer. My advice for men is to eat many red fruits and vegetables to avoid prostate problems and cancer. Also a plant-based diet is highly alkaline. Acid foods like meat, dairy, and sugar will make you more vulnerable to disease and cancer.

2. Get 60 to 80 percent of your diet from living or live food such as fresh organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. There are many great raw cookbooks available with delicious recipes. Another easy way to get plenty of healthy raw food is to start the day with the following Super Energy Breakfast Drink: Start with a good blender or Vita-Mix. Add 1 apple, 1 banana, a handful of grapes, 1 kiwi, or whatever fruit you like, 3 tablespoons of Organic Flaxseed Oil, 2 Scoops of SuperManna, add a few ice cubes or use frozen fruit to give it a little chill but not too cold. I also may add a tablespoon of pumpkin, flax, and sunflower seeds  and perhaps 10 almonds. Add all of the above to 24 ounces of organic apple juice and blend for 30 seconds to one minute. This will make four or five servings. You will get amazing amounts of energy from the 14 Super Foods and the four or five servings of fresh live fruits seeds and nuts first thing in the morning, right when you need it. The Super Energy Breakfast Drink contains all the protein, essential fatty acids, and healthy carbohydrates you need for the a great start for the day. In addition to the breakfast drink, have a big green salad for lunch or dinner with all your favorite vegetables containing even more fiber and protein, vitamins, and minerals. If you will eat 8 servings of fresh organic produce every day you will protect yourself against cancer, heart disease and other major diseases. Eat a high alkaline diet of fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. Try growing some of your own food and plant some fruit trees. Citrus trees are beautiful in landscaping the yard and they are evergreen. Teach your children how to plant seeds and make a garden together. Make it fun. I just started a new garden method called the Square Foot Garden. You use less water, spend less time weeding, and get more produce with less time and energy. I bought 15 raised garden beds and am so excited on teaching this method at BellaVita and our coming Medical Missionary School — R I S E N!

4. Avoid eating animal foods. Animal food is high in protein and fat that increases one’s chance of getting cancer and other chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Animal food is void of all fiber making it a major cause of colorectal cancer. It is also high in cholesterol and therefore a contributor of heart disease. Cultures that eat the highest amounts of animal foods have the highest amounts of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other diseases. Eating the flesh of animals is not necessary, and in fact contributes to an early grave. Global obesity is plaguing the world and animal foods are a major cause of the increase in overweight people. Obesity is a major cause of disease and diabetes.

5. Avoid all dairy products. Dairy is liquid meat, and any disease in the animal is most likely also in its secretions. Milk is the number-one cause of childhood anemia and allergy. I remember the late Dr. Vigil Hulse once told me that as a Milk and Dairy inspector for 13 years in California, he found 80% of the herds had cows with leukemia and 50% of the herds had cows with Bovine AIDS. This was in the county in which I live. Milk Does A Body Good? Instead, drink water or fresh juices when thirsty. The FDA allows 750 million pus cells per liter of milk.

6. Avoid refined white sugar, white flour, and ordinary salt or sea salt. Use Sugar is acid forming and weakens the immune system. It contributes to diabetes and obesity. When using salt, use Celtic Salt or Real Salt instead for they contain all the minerals from the ocean instead of just sodium and chloride.  Regular table salt is a poison to your cells. Learn to eat foods as close to God’s original design as possible.

7.
Avoid artificial sweeteners like Nutrasweet that causes lesions in the brain, MS symptoms, diabetes, and painful joints to name a few. Learn to eat food as God gave it in the garden like fresh fruit which I call “God’s candies.” Artificial sweeteners are associated with increase disease and cancers.

8. Exercise at least four or five days a week.  We need all the oxygen we can get. My favorite exercises are racquetball and weightlifting. This gives me the combination of aerobic exercise like racquetball for my heart and circulation and anaerobic exercise like weightlifting for building bone density, strength, and toning the muscles. Both forms of exercise are good and necessary for eliminating toxins through the lymph system. Exercise is wondeful for fighting depression and increasing longevity.  Perfect health comes with perfect circulation.

9. Increase your consumption of pure water and drink 6 to 8 glasses a day or more depending on your size and weight. One rule is a half-ounce for every pound of body weight. Avoid chlorine and fluoride. They can cause cancer, hypothyroidism, and other complications. Use a water filter if necessary.

10. Start drinking fresh organic juices everyday if possible. A combination of carrot, apple, celery, chard and parsley is a great immune-building formula that is high in potassium and phytochemicals. I make a green smoothie in the morning by adding green leafy vegetables like kale to my fruit smoothie. The leafy vegetables with the fruits do not cause indigestion.

11. Cleanse your elimination organs on a seasonal basis. Cleanse the colon, liver, kidney, lung, blood, lymph and skin using organic herbal formulas, saunas, skin brushing, etc. And do not be afraid of cleansing. Remember the old saying: “Death begins in the colon.” I recommend doing a 10-day cleanse like Modern Manna’s Super Cleanse. Many people come to BellaVita for a fabulous cleansing and detoxifying experience like no others. We constantly witness healing miracles at our programs.

12. Have a positive attitude and get moving if you feel depressed. Doing something for someone else that has a need will help heal your own discouragement. My #1 recommendation for depression is exercise! Memorize Scripture promises and claim them when you are assailed with negative thoughts. I recite Isaiah 26:3, 4: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

13. Breathe deeply several times a day of fresh air. Take a walk in the open air. Walking outside or through a forest is always nice and refreshing. Exercise in the open air is a blessing.

14. Get 30 minutes of sunshine every day on your front and back if possible, but do not burn. The best times are before 11 AM or after 4 PM.

15: Exercise self control and practice temperance. Temperance is a Bible doctrine. It means to abstain entirely from things that are harmful and use judiciously the things that are good. In other words do not overeat or be a glutton. Some Bible verses to review on temperance are: Acts 24:24-26; 1 Cor. 9: 24-27; Galatians 5:22-25; Titus 2:1, 2; 2 Peter 1:6. Try to avoid eating between meals or before bed. Eat at regular intervals so digestion will be thorough and complete.

16. Trust in God, spend time in prayer, and study your Bible every day. Prayer is the key in the hand of faith that unlocks Heaven’s storehouse. Ask for fresh supplies of grace everyday. Make time for morning prayer, devotion and have family worship everyday. I have made family worship a priority and have seen the difference in my children.

17. Love your enemies and forgive those that have wronged you. Remember, Forgiveness is the key to freedom. Don’t delay since Christ is coming soon!

Please forward  email to your friends and family or anyone else who may benefit from it. May God richly bless you as you begin a new year!

Fasting For Weight Loss

The idea of fasting is still tied to the spiritual and religious practices. When many people  first hear about fasting, they immediately relate the term to the Catholics who practice this during Lent or to Muslims during Ramadan. In ancient times when people fasted they believed that doing so would improve their clarity of thought, and bring spiritual enlightenment and inspiration. In fact fasting is one module of wellness and healing that has mental, spiritual, and physical benefits.

Many people do not fully comprehend the amazing benefit of fasting for health and wellness.

Although many have tried fasting   but not everyone understands its concept and benefits,  this series will take a look at fasting its importance and benefits for wellness and health, and specifically weight-loss.

As you read on, you will find a lot of information on the topic. Part 1 however just lays the foundation of why we need to fast. This helps us to understand the reasoning behind fasting for total wellness…spiritual, mental, and physical.

Take note however that results will vary with each person as each and every one of us response differently. Two people can be subjected to the same conditions and their reactions can be quite different.

“In my opinion, the greatest discovery by modern man is the power to rejuvenate himself physically, mentally, and spiritually with Rational Fasting.” The Miracle of Fasting by Paul Bragg, ND, PhD

The Body

The body is a physical structure of a living thing. It is made up of cells, tissues, organs and systems that work hand in hand. They form a complex system of relationship that the absence of one greatly cripples the entire body. The loss of an eye makes it hard for our other systems to grasp the events happening around and must rely to the remaining senses.

Our body is one wonderful machine, a wonder of science.  The complexity of it and how it is able to perform so many things at a time often leads it to being called the “wonder machine”.

Consider that we  frequently defy the laws set by the Creator, which we call natural laws, when failing to care for our body. And when our body seems to be slowing down, many simply revive it with caffeine or some similar stimulant time and again.

Many people  eat like there is no tomorrow of the body’s remarkable ability to handle such a burden and keep ticking.  The body will simply digest, absorb and excrete what we eat. Many drink and smoke because the body continues to function around the  clock.

Yet do we also know that too much abuse of  the body is also bad. Our body is just like any machine…in  that once it reaches its limit, it breaks down. Too much alcohol, unhealthy food and lifestyle combined with stress is extremely harmful to our body. As we age, the maximum capacity of our body will only reach its peak once and will decrease over time. Because of the decrease, our body becomes prone to different ailments and sickness, we become weak over time and if we don’t heed  the pleas of our aging body,  it can actually cost us our lives.

It must be remembered that our body should be handled with care.

Stress and the human body

What is stress?  It is said that stress is a condition that almost everyone can relate in an everyday sense. Stress is not new and we are no stranger to stress. Almost everything and every where there is stress, there is stress in the workplace, at home at school etc. However once stress reaches a level wherein it has a negative effect on the body it is more accurately defined as “distress”.

How people react to stress differs. Stress is caused by different factors and different people react diffrently. Our personality and emotions, not to mention or spirituality, will determine how much the effect of stress on our body will be. Some people handle stress well. These people are able to meet up with deadlines calmly and still give positive results.

Nevertheless the physical effects of stress on our body can be very to both damaging our emotional and physical health. While the effects are subtle, the long term effects of stress are deadly.  It has become a mainstream reality to accept the fact that stress shortens our lives. Increased risk of heart disease, nervous breakdowns, stomach ulcers, tension headaches, and an increased susceptibility to infection are just a few of the things that stress can do to us. No single effect of stress is beneficial to us.

Although stress in the short run can have positive effects such as the ability to react to the situation quickly and resolve it as immediately as possible, it is never good in the long run.

Stress affects our health, body and mind to such great extent that we are crippled by its effects over time. Some of the signs of stress include short-temper, anxiety, impatience, low moral, temperature changes, blood pressure increase, and migraines and so on. Yet there are times when the stress is not so intense and that person has a higher threshold, the stress condition may actually be of beneficial results that will end shortly with  complete relaxation.

Most often that not, insomnia and depression are the most common effects of stress on us. Because of the two, our mental and physical state is affected. Likewise, our eating habits are often affected  which leads to  low energy levels and thus making us unproductive.

Fasting…has your lifestyle laid a toxic foundation?

It is often emphasized that a healthy lifestyle is always the ideal, one especially today that health care costs are out of control.

With the fast paced life, we depend on processed food and fast foods. We have bombarded ourselves with medicines and drugs and this with less exercise.

Some of the factors which make our lifestyle unhealthy are as follows:

  • Too much junk food being put into our hands especially in children’s hands. Junk food which contains saturated fat increases blood cholesterol levels and therefore increases your risk of heart disease and some cancer among other things
  • Life is full of stress. Modern life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. Work can be a stressful place, whether in an office, a factory, or a school. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life.
  • People are generally dependent on medical drugs and are not aware that medical drug side effects are dangerous to their health. In the world today, many people seem to think that they just want medicines and drugs to solve their health problems; they believe they can always seek medical assistance. But what they are not aware of is that these pharmaceutical medications may have potential adverse reactions. Some drugs which are toxic to your liver and can do some very detrimental  things to your health and metabolism, perhaps you obediently swallow those little poisons without considering what they are doing to your body.
  • Exposure to pollution and toxic wastes such poisonous agents from the household items. Our bodies are absorbing the harmful chemicals surrounding the environment today. It is thus imperative that we clean up our living environment as much as possible. Those regular detergents, soaps, shampoos, toothpastes and perfumes that we uses today contain many chemicals which are toxic to our bodies, some even carcinogenic.
  • Lack of exercise. Exercise always improves our fitness level. No questions asked bout this. It also helps to detoxify the body

Here enters, fasting… In part Part 2 we will get more into the details of fasting.

HEALTH IMPLICATIONS OF BEING OVERWEIGHT

overweight Cleanse Colon Lose Weight

Being overweight can lead to more possibilities of having several medical disorders. If you weigh more than you should, you are in danger of having the following:

*increased blood pressure levels

* Hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol levels)

* arthritis

* Knee replacement surgery

* Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

* social struggles

* inferiority complex

Being overweight is a major risk factor for a number of chronic diseases. Losing weight, even if it is only a fracture of a pound, can help reduce your likelihood of suffering from different diseases as you age. If you already have a health problem, losing weight can help you manage your condition. In some disorders, weight loss can help reduce and even eliminate the need for medication.

Hypertension is one of the main causes of cerebrovascular accident that could result to an enduring medical problem and loss of life. You can reduce your risk of developing hypertension and hypercholesterolemia if you keep your weight within a healthy range. However, you also need to know where your body stores fat. If you are similar to most males, fat is concentrated in the region of the belly, and a great quantity of fat in that area increases your chances of having cardiac disorders. Regular aerobic exercise is the best way to get rid of abdominal fat. Also, if your waist measures more than 40 inches, you are more likely to develop high blood pressure. Your BMI is also a significant guide in determining your likelihood of developing cardiac problems. Do your best to keep your BMI around 18.5 to 24.9 to always be at the peak of health.

And also, excess weight can place additional force on your joints, particularly your knees, hips, and lower back. Due to this added load, the cartilage, which pads and supports the joints slowly wears down resulting to osteoarthritis. Over the years, the damage to the joint may be so extensive that the joint must be replaced surgically. This damage is permanent and cannot be reversed. Tendinitis, or swelling of the tendons, is also widespread among those who are overweight. Tendons can become irritated and inflamed, especially the Achilles tendon, which stretches from your calf to your heel from simple, everyday activities such as walking. Weight loss reduces the pressure on the joints and tendons and lessens injury. Losing weight can also ease the aching and swelling caused by osteoarthritis.

Also, if a person is overweight the excessive fat in the abdominal cavity increases the pressure inside it. This causes the contents of the stomach to travel up into the gullet. Loss of weight reduces stomach acid reflux.

Overweight people develop negative self-images. Low self-esteem can affect aspects of health and behaviour such as social adjustment, activity engagement, and goal direction. Being picked on is a very cruel thing and it can severely hurt the self-esteem.

People who are overweight know they have a problem. They understand that their figure is not what it is supposed to be. They recognize as well that they consume more than what is needed.

The trouble is that they might not be knowledgeable about stopping this behaviour. Food consoles them. They might consider themselves useless since they cannot overcome their weight issues.

But then, they might not have the necessary equipment and encouragement. They may be surrounded by family and friends who do not have weight issues and who just do not get it.

These are only a small number of ways that excess weight can harmfully influence the well-being of a person. What’s great is that more people are getting more conscious with weight issues and its prevention.

atkins diet review Cleanse Colon Loose Weight Click

From its original announcement in 1972 a large number of people have sought to overcome their problems with weight and heart related ailments because of the Atkins Diet Plan.  Dr. Atkins presented his  plan as being  equally efficient in managing several illnesses such as cephalalgia, diabetes, apathetic metabolism, difficulty to tolerate certain foods, hypersensitivity, and a lot more disorders. Although the main reason why people turn to Atkins Diet is simply that it claims to provide fast weight loss, many people with high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome reported that they felt more energetic than they had in years after one week on the Atkins Diet. This does not mean however that the totality of the benefits or perceived benefit is good.

Despite the fact that health experts were suggesting foods low in fat and high in carbohydrates, the Atkins diet recommends that individuals who want to achieve weight loss should do the opposite. The principle of the Atkins diet is to get about 66% of your daily calories from fat and to consume meat and cheese rather than bread, pasta, fruits, and vegetables. In place of carbohydrates and sugar, the Atkins Diet Plan immensely suggests fat and protein in higher amounts. The plan clearly favors animal proteins; so for that reason, the Atkins diet will be tough to follow for vegans and vegetarians.

Many diet and medical professionals have freely disapproved of Atkins’ principle on weight loss because they feel that eating limitless amounts of fat, particularly saturated fat encountered in meat products, can lead to elevated chance of heart disease.

It’s been said that any diet that limits carbs to cause the body to rely on fat or muscle for energy can be potentially dangerous. When our body breaks down stored fat to supply energy, a by-product called ketones is formed. Ketones tend to restrain hunger, but they can also lead to exhaustion, stomach sickness, and dehydration. Anyone with diabetes, heart, or kidney problems should check with their physician before following a low carbohydrate diet.

The downsides of the Atkins Diet Plan are halitosis, and constipation because of the low-fiber diet.

Extensive study on healthy populations shows us to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limiting these foods for the sake of losing weight can result in health issues in the long run.

GASTRO-ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE COMMON IN OVERWEIGHTS

Overweight

An increasing body of evidence indicates that being overweight and obesity favours the development of numerous disorders such as joint problems, hypertension and heart disease, and increases the risk for cancer and post operative morbidity. Furthermore, being overweight or obese is suggested to foster gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The Herb Shack Click Now

In contrast to those who have a normal weight, those who are overweight who have a BMI of 25 to 30 kg/m2 have 50% more chances of having GERD, and those who are obese with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 and above are twice more likely to have GERD.

Furthermore, the chances of getting GERD seemed to rise in a dose-response relationship with the ballooning of weight. An additional BMI of 3.5 kg/m2 paves way to a 2.7 times more chances of having GERD. In contrast, a decrease of 3.5 kg/m2 of BMI cut your chances of having GERD by 40%.

The system causing the relation of obesity with GERD is still unknown. But, it was observed that obesity has been linked to more intra-abdominal pressure, impaired gastric emptying, lesser lower esophageal sphincter pressure, and more incidence of transient sphincter relaxation, which can all advance to more esophageal acid exposure.

Obesity and being overweight increases your chances of having acidic disorders of the esophagus. It was suggested that future studies should examine the mechanism by which being overweight and obesity cause these complications, as well as the potential effects of weight loss. In the meantime, however, it is prudent to counsel all overweight patients who present with GERD-related diseases that weight loss may help improve symptoms.

It was observed in a research as well that there is an obvious connection between BMI and GERD in both sexes. As oppose to men with a BMI lower than 25, the risk factor for GERD is 3.3 times higher to men who have a BMI higher than 35. Extremely overweight women have 6.3 times more chances of suffering from gastro-esophageal reflux disease compared to those with average weight.

It is even more dangerous to those females who have a BMI higher than 35 who have used estrogen-only hormone substitutes. They are 33 times more likely to have gastro-esophageal reflux disease compared to that of normal-weight, non-hormone users.

This research presents an obvious link between gastro-esophageal reflux disease, obesity, and hormone treatment in females. It is believed that overweight females generate more substances similar to estrogen in their fatty tissue, which may actually be the reason why losing weight decreases the likelihood of having GERD. Thus, this gives us one more motive to beat the bulge insistently.

Extra weight places pressure on your stomach, which can prevent the lower esophageal sphincter from opening and closing properly.

If you are fat, weight loss of just ten to fifteen pounds can prevent gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Healthcare providers suggest as well that those who suffer from GERD should avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes to decrease the strain on their tummy.
