I recently wrote a blog post entitled Health Care, Obama, And The Natural Health And Wellness Solution discussing how in light of the health care debate and the astronomical health care cost that have led to that debate, that alternative practitioners as well as conventional doctors that use alternative approaches should be given more freedom to practice. I pointed out that I do not believe that the current proposed health care plan will help, in part, because it does nothing about the most critical issue, and that is the expense of the currently recognized treatments employed for our most deadly and debilitating diseases; additionally, it may very well, in time, restrict more medical freedoms.

On the other hand I also pointed out that those who advocate the free market approach to health care in large part will help frame laws or sit idly by while laws are framed that will restrict their choice to choose an alternative practitioner if they choose to do so. This would allow more competition into the market and help drive cost down. However as I said in the article cited above there are those that are really not interested in free market solutions, but rather slick ways to monopolize the market which they have already done.

That leads me to the crux of this post…

According to the North County Times Prosecutors recently brought criminal charges against a California family doctor charged with promising terminally ill cancer patients that they might be cured with an herbal treatment. According to reports , Dr Christine Daniel, using her influence as an ordained Pentecostal minister tapped into the vessel of religion to lure people from across the country to try her regimen.

The reports indicate that she even appeared on the Trinity Broadcasting Network in 2002 advocating her cancer cure and its sixty percent success rate, according to federal investigators. Authorities arrested Daniel, fifty five, at her San Fernando Valley home in October and charged her with two counts each of wire and mail crime. If found guilty, she is facing up to eighty years in jail.

In all, federal prosecutors announced Daniel siphoned about $1.1 million from fifty five families between 2001 and 2004. At least 6 patients varying in age from four to sixty-nine died inside 7 months after seeing Daniel is what is being claimed. "This is an example of a doctor who is preying on the most vulnerable folks in our society," recounted assistant U.S. attorney, Joseph Johns. He also declared: "These patients were told they were being cured, but they were being eaten alive by cancer.".

A telephone message left for Daniel's lawyer, Manuel Miller, wasn't returned right away. Prosecutors claimed Daniel concocted a cure known, among other names, as "C-Extract" that she revealed would help treat cancer and other abnormalities like multiple sclerosis, hepatitis, and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Some of her patients were attracted to her from her appearance on TBN's "Praise the Lord." according to a North County Times article. The article claims that Daniel told spectators she picked up herbs from across the world, and, when they were mixed with prayer, there had been an excellent chance their cancer may be cured.

How Many Die From Chemo?

Although not all is known concerning the events that surrounded the patients of Dr. Daniel(thus I am neither for or against her specific treatment/s) one has to ask if in fact her patients were terminally ill what was the likelihood that they would have lived with traditional treatments and if those treatments were shown to hasten their death would the providers also have been arrested?

For example the BBC news carried a story in November of 2008 of a study that discovered in "a review of 600 cancer patients who died within 30 days of treatment found that in more than a quarter of cases it actually hastened or caused death. The report by the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death said doctors should consider reducing doses or not using chemotherapy at all… The group of patients the independent group was looking at represents 2% of the 80,000 people who receive chemotherapy each year."

The study "found that in 27% of cases it hastened or caused death – the toxic nature of the treatment can lead to a range of problems, the most serious of which is an infection called neutropenic sepsis."

Now that study looked at only a relatively small amount of people that actually receive chemotherapy so one might imagine just how many people are dying from the medication and yet a family doctor that attempts to use an alternative approach is arrested and charged.

This Is Not New

To one who may be surprised that this has occurred in America where one should be allowed to chose alternative treatments if they so choose a look at history reveals a little of the reason for this atmosphere.
