The Telegraph in an Article dated December 1, 2009  reported that Prince Charles, wants to offer protection to the future of alternative medicine from new ECU rules, and guarantee its protection .The Prince, a long-time fan of complementary care, has held talks with Andy Burnham, the health Secretary, to encourage him to introduce guarantees among a crackdown by the ECU that might prevent anyone that isn't a registered health practitioner  from even  selling natural remedies.

The govt is consulting on the ECU plan, due to come into force in April. Campaigners are looking for a licensing system to be established earlier among fears that smaller practitioners might be made to close under the EU directive. They also desire what they have termed "reputable" practitioners to be approved sooner than 2011 to guard patients.

Prince Charles's intervention places him in opposition  with eminent scientists who regard Chinese herbalism as "quackery". However the The Royal School of Physicians  is against approved regulation on the grounds it might make such treatments "respectable". In spite of the fact the paper points out that  Brits spend about £1.6 blllion a year on alternative medicine, there's now no official system of regulation in the United Kingdom, meaning anyone can treat a patient.
