Are You Sick Or Just Thirsty?

WATER-THE MIRACLE FLUID:
1) At most you can only live 10-12 days without water even in a cool place.
2) In order for your lungs to use air it must be warm and moist. Drinking enough water ensures this.
3) Drinking enough water prevents your skin from becoming to dry.
4) Failure to drink enough water will allow toxins to build up in the system.
5) Sufficient water helps protects the body against the hazards of the changing seasons and weather.
6) Water is a natural diuretic and is very essential for a disease or overworked kidney.
7) Drinking adequate water helps prevent kidney infection, by preventing over concentrated urine.[1]
These are just a few of the many benefits of water. Most people know that water intake is important, but very fewrealize how vitally important water is to the over-all health of the human body.

THE WATER CURE
Perhaps the most outspoken doctor on the importance of water in the cure of disease and sickness is Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, M.D (hereinafter Dr. B.). Dr. B has taken a very strong stance against the use of drugs, and for the use of water in the treatment of disease and “He is arguing for a new scientific approach that turns clinical medicine on its head” stated The Daily Telegraph, London England. Dr. B has stated himself, “The drug industry has taken advantage of this medical blind spot and has hijacked medical education and the research priorities of the Nation. It has brainwashed the medical community into treating people’s different natural crisis calls for water with medications. It has used the power of fear-driven advertising in mainstream media to generate demand and sales of individual drugs to the public. Now all physiological manifestations, or adaptive processes of the body, when it is suffering “deep dehydration,” are treated with this, that, or even a cocktail of chemicals.”[2]

Although Dr. B’s stance may appear to be a new stance it’s really not new at all. As far back as the 1800’s health educator, Ellen White, wrote “ In health and in sickness, pure water is one of Heaven’s choicest blessings. Its proper use promotes health. It is the beverage which God provided to quench the thirst of animals and man. Drunk freely, it helps to supply the necessities of the system, and assists nature to resist disease.    “ I should eat sparingly, thus relieving my system of unnecessary burden, and should encourage cheerfulness, and give myself the benefits of proper exercise in the open air. I should bathe frequently, and drink freely of pure, soft water. Thousands have died for want of pure water and pure air, who might have lived. . . . These blessings they need in order to become well. If they would become enlightened, and let medicine alone, and accustom themselves to outdoor exercise, and to air in their houses, summer and winter, and use soft water for drinking and bathing purposes, they would be comparatively well and happy instead of dragging out a miserable existence.”[3]

Dr. B in his book, Your Body’s Many Cries For Water, explains that the body has a built in rationing system for water. He explains that the “process primarily involves a strict rationing of the ‘water’reserves of the body.” In this system the body rations out water to the body based upon areas of importance from the greatest to the least. “Within these systems of water rationing, the brain function takes absolute priority over all the other systems- the brain is 1/50th of the total body weight, but it receives 18-20 percent of blood circulation.”[4]

Dr. B explains further, “When the ‘ration masters’ in charge of body water reserve regulation and distribution become more and more active, they also give their own alarm signals to show that the area in question is short of water, very much like the radiator of a car giving out steam when the cooling system is not adequate for the uphill drive of the car.”

GASTRITIS, HEARTBURN
Dr. B points out that dyspeptic pain is the most important signal for the human body. It shows up in the very young as well as the old. “Chronic and persistently increasing dehydration is the root cause of almost all currently encountered major diseases of the human body. Of the dyspeptic pains, that of gastritis… and heartburn should be treated with an increase of water intake alone. When there is associated ulceration(s), attention to the daily diet to enhance the rate of repair of the ulcer site becomes necessary.”[5]

HEARTBURN
“Heartburn is a signal of water shortage in the gastrointestinal tract. It is a major thirst signal of the human body. The use of antacids or tablet medications in the treatment of this pain does not correct dehydration, and the body continues to suffer as a result of its water shortage. All too often, doctors fail to recognize heartburn as a sign of dehydration – and treat it with antacids, acid blockers, and other potentially harmful medications. Over time, these drugs produce stomach inflammation, ulcers, hiatal hernia, and eventually cancers in the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and pancreas. The truth is, chronic heartburn is a sign of water shortage in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a major thirst signal of the human body. Taking antacids to treat this pain does nothing to correct dehydration, and your body continues to suffer as a result of its water shortage. Not recognizing heartburn as a sign of dehydration and treating it with antacids and pill medications will, in time, produce inflammation of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, hiatal hernia, and localized ulcerations. It will ultimately cause cancer of the esophagus, as well as other cancers in the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and pancreas.”[6]

Dr. B writes: “I have treated with only water well over 3000 persons with dyspeptic pain…they all responded to an increase in their water intake, and their clinical problems associated with the pain disappeared. The report of my new way of treating dyspeptic pain with water was published as the editorial article in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, in June of 1983.”[7]  Dr. B says further that once a person reaches a certain threshold of dehydration, when the body urgently calls for water nothing else will take its place. All medications, with the exception of water, are powerless to afford the patient any relief. He points to a young man that he treated in his middle twenties. The young man had suffered from peptic ulcer disease for a number of years, and had been diagnosed as having a “duodenal ulcer” (The duodenum is the first part of the small intestines, which connects to the stomach).  He had been given antacids and brand name cimetidine medications. The doctor explains, “Cimetidine is a form of very strong medication that blocks the action of histamine on its “2nd” type receiver points, generally known as “receptors” in the body… It just so happens that some cells in the stomach that produce the acid are sensitive to this medication. However, many many, other cells in the body that do not produce acid are also sensitive to the blocking action of this medication . This is why this medication has many other side effects (including impotence in the young) and has proven extremely dangerous in the chronically dehydrate older age group.”[8]

When Dr. B met the young man he was lying on the floor in his room, almost semiconscious, folded in the fetal position and in a great amount of pain. The young man did not respond to the doctor, and was unaware of his surroundings as well as the concerned people around him. He only responded to the doctor after the doctor shook him.In response to what was wrong he groaned that his ulcer was “killing” him. The pain had begin about one in the afternoon, shortly after he ate lunch, and increased in intensity as time passed. He had taken three tablets of Cimetidine and an entire bottle of antacid during this time. He received absolutely no relief.  The doctor feared that the young man’s ulcer had perforated, but determined it had not after examination. “The arsenal of medications in such circumstances is very limited,” writes Dr. B. “Often, such cases would end on the operating table of some knife-happy surgeon. Because of my extensive experience with the pain-relieving property of water in dyspeptic pains, I gave this man two full glasses of water-one pint.”[9]

The young man was reluctant at first to take the doctors advice, but was reminded that the other medications had failed to work. The young man decided to try the water “medication” while the doctor sat and observed him. In about 15 minutes his pain became less severe and his groans ceased. Dr. B gave him another full glass of water (a half pint), and in a few minutes his pain disappeared completely. The medications had failed to relieve the young man’s pain within a 10-hour period, while the three glasses of water had produced obvious relief in 20 minutes!

The reason all of the medications failed to do anything for the young man is because there is a brain component to the intensity of signaling thirst in the body. Put another way, after a certain threshold, painkillers were not effective at all. When the body is calling for water because of severe dehydration, nothing else will register the right message with the brain to cease its call for water. “The same mode of pain registration is operative in other regions that signal dehydration in any particular individual.”[10]
On another occasion Dr. B explains that he had an opportunity to “test whether the abdominal pain was time-dependent or water-volume dependent.” While working in a clinic Dr. B describes, “a man carried by two other persons into the clinic where [he] was working at the time. The patient could not walk; he was lifted from under his arms by two other persons. He, too, was a peptic ulcer patient in extremely severe upper abdominal or dyspeptic pain; after examination to see that he had not perforated, I gave the patient one full glass of water every hour. He did not receive total relief in 20 minutes. He recovered after he had taken three glasses of water. On average it takes less severe cases about eight minutes to achieve total pain relief.”[11] Such are the healing properties of the miracle fluid water!
